 Bonita Beach Area Report April 8, 2001 Captain Dave Hanson of Fishbuster Charters fished 9 miles west of Naples, 8 ˝ miles west of New Pass, 16 ˝ miles west of Wiggins Pass, and at the DGH Reef off Bonita Beach this week, with live shrimp on light tackle, and with grunts and blue runners for bait on heavy tackle. Joe Busa, with Joe Jr., Michelle, Dave & Tom, fished in 33 feet with Captain Dave on Monday. They caught and released gag grouper to 21 inches, triggerfish, sheepshead, grunts, porkfish, and keeper mangrove snapper. They hooked, but lost, two "big somethings", and also spotted a 10 foot hammerhead shark. Jeff Kirk, daughter Hilliary, and friend Allison, from IN. fished off New Pass with Hanson Tuesday. They caught and released gag grouper to 20 inches, triggerfish, mangrove snapper, and sheepshead to 15 inches. They also landed half of a triggerfish, after a big barracuda bit it on its way to the boat! Something big enough to straighten out a 7-O hook also bit, but escaped. |
Wednesday, Bob & Jim Mansfield and friend Jim Fedders took a Fishbuster
Charter 16 ˝ miles west of Wigggins Pass. They caught keeper mangrove snapper
to 16 inches, keeper sheepshead to 15 inches, keeper triggerfish,
catch-and-release gag grouper to 20 inches, blue runners, and jolthead
porgies. John Martin, Dan Bargdill, Bob Gordon, Bob Leins, and Joe Bartoletti, all of the Brooks Fishing Club, had a great day with Captain Hanson Thursday, fishing in 26 feet, west of Bonita Beach. They caught two keeper gag grouper at 24 inches and 28 ˝ inches, keeper sheepshead to 18 inches, grunts, Spanish mackerel, a 29 inch permit, and a 6 foot nurse shark (released). Friday, Ross Christensen, son David, and grandsons Brennan and Alex fished with Captain Dave at the DGH Reef off Bonita Beach. They caught keeper mangrove snapper to 18 inches, sheepshead, blue runners and grunts. The Craig Royal party fished the DGH Reef with Hanson on Saturday, and caught sheepshead, blue runners, grunts, Spanish mackerel, and a 22 inch permit. They hooked, but lost, a larger permit also. Sunday, Martin & Janet Cousineau and son Tyler fished 8 miles off Bonita Beach on a Fishbuster Charter in 20 feet. Using live shrimp and pinfish, they caught keeper gag grouper to 25 inches, lane snapper, keeper triggerfish, porkfish, and grunts. Capt.
